What we do
Care starts before the ambulance arrives
Community First Responders are dispatched by West Midlands Ambulance Service to selected emergency calls when they may be able to reach a patient before an ambulance crew.
Responders are trained to assess patients, begin basic life support, use a defibrillator and provide appropriate immediate care until ambulance clinicians arrive and take over.

Ready to respond when time is critical
The ambulance service decides when a community responder is the right additional resource for an emergency.
Heart attack
Responders can provide an early assessment, reassurance and appropriate first aid before further clinical help arrives.
Stroke
Recognising the signs promptly helps support the urgent ambulance response these time-critical emergencies need.
Choking
Trained responders can provide immediate life-saving first aid when every minute matters.
Diabetic emergencies
Responders can assess and support a patient until an ambulance clinician takes over their care.
A coordinated response

A responder may provide early help, but an ambulance is still sent according to the needs of the patient and the ambulance service's clinical assessment.

Responders attend only when requested by the ambulance service through its emergency control arrangements.
